Book Club Recap 11/16/10

Attendees: Addie, Christopher, Heather, Lisa K., Rhonda, & Valesca with appearances from Anderson and Nathan.

When Christopher and I got there it was only Lisa and Rhonda. We talked about baby stuff and passed Anderson around. Then we discussed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series and what we liked about the books. We all liked the three of them and found it hard to remember exactly what was in one book versus another. It was mentioned how we were a little sad when the last book was finished because we knew that there would not be anymore of the story. Addie came around this time and Christopher and I had to leave to take care of the little ones :(

Valesca showed up later and it sounds like more was discussed about the Dragon Tattoo books. I believe that only Lisa read One Day. Rhonda and I are both reading it now and are enjoying it. I find that it is a little like When Harry Met Sally.

The next book that we will be reading is Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King Christopher was thrilled to hear that we picked a Stephen King book because he loves him!

Next book club will be on Tuesday December 28th at Rhonda's house.

Rhonda, if any of this is wrong please let the rest of the group know :)

Book Club Recap 9/28/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Lisa K, Michelle, Raven, Rhonda, and a special guest appearance by Addie!

The first book that we talked about was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Everyone in the group really enjoyed this book and many of the other members had read the next book or the whole series. We were debating about which book we thought was the best and it seemed like #3 might be the best? We also discussed how the author died after he turned in all three manuscripts and how it is claimed that his girlfriend found a fourth manuscript on his computer and how there is a legal battle going on between the family and the girlfriend over it.

Next we discussed Mockingjay, which was the third and final book of the Hunger Games. Everyone who read this book liked it, but it wasn't the favorite out of the three. We definitely thought that this book was darker than the rest of them. I won't say much else about what we talked about just incase someone on here isn't done and wants to read it.

Christopher and Nathan left and Denise and Addie arrived. Since Denise had read some of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and watched the movie and Addie read the book we discussed the book some more. We all talked about how we loved that the author portrayed a really strong female character and we all really liked Lisbeth. Most of us had seen the movie and we thought that the casting of Lisbeth was spot-on to how she was described in the book. The conversation about this book was a little hard to do because others wanted to talk about stuff that was going on in book 2 and 3, but Denise didn't want to hear anything (I am in the middle of book 2). Then there were some big differences between the book and movie, so we told Denise that she has to finish reading the book and we didn't discuss the differences so as not to ruin that either. I can't remember much else...

Denise was a little obsessed with her phone because she just got a new one and was trying to figure it out. There was one point where I am pretty sure her and Addie were texting each other and they were sitting right next to each other! Rhonda also got out her iPad. There was also Kindle talk. There was also some baby and pregnancy talk because I am due in three weeks and Lisa is due in about three months. After most people left we watched Dancing With the Stars to see some of Addie's friends perform and we weren't too impressed and I couldn't believe how much they drag out the results show. Cooper showed up with a big basket of cookies and we all got to take some home :)

We decided on two books for the next book club! We will be reading One Day by David Nicholls and The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson

Book club will be on Tuesday November 9th at 7pm at Rhonda's house. I should have had baby #2 by then and if I am up for it I will be there with the little one.

Speaking of the little one Christopher and I have a baby pool going. If you feel like participating please do! We have the prize as some Oktoberfest beer that Christopher brewed, but for our members your prize could be the book that we choose for the book club after November (if you don't want the beer). Book Club Recap 8/3/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Nathan, Randy (I think that was Raven's friends name), Raven, Rhonda, & Tina.

The only ones that were at book club that read the book were Callah and Rhonda. Callah didn't like the book and Rhonda did like it. They didn't talk about it because I will still try and read it and they had already discussed it amongst themselves. Julie B. said that she didn't care for it in an email and I know that Lisa I. read it, but I don't know if she liked it or not...if she didn't like it then I might have to not read it!

We talked about Rhonda's white chicken and how it might be a rooster :(! I guess that around 6am it sounds like it is cock-a-doodling, which isn't a good thing. We hope that it isn't going to be a rooster! We talked about Raven and Randy's internship and working in the costume and design business. Denise told us that she did the whole Bulldog, which is very impressive! She will do it a couple more times before the big race. Callah had her 98 year old Grandma make a Pecan Pie for book club and it was delicious!

We talked about other things, but I can't remember what about, but it was very fun!

Our next book club will be on Tuesday September 21, 2010 at 7pm at Rhonda's house. The book that we will be reading is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Dragon-Tattoo-Stieg-Larsson/dp/0307454541/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281221130&sr=8-1 Also, since so many of us have pre-ordered the book Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (comes out 8/24), which is the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy we figured that we could talk about this book too.

We hope that we will get to see more of our members at the next book club! This will probably also be my last book club pregnant, then we should have a new little member :)

Book Club Recap 7/6/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Rambo, Rhonda, & Tina. With appearances by Cooper and Nathan.

We discussed the book The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint by Brady Udall. Only Rambo, Rhonda, and I read the book. We told everyone the story of Edgar Mint and I would write those details here, but I don't want to ruin any details of the book incase you still want to read it. It is a little depressing and some of the members who didn't read the book didn't have a desire to read the book after we discussed what it was about. The three of us that read the book really liked it, even though Edgar was in horrible situations throughout most of the book. The writing was really good and even though Edgar did some bad things he was a very likable character and a good person at heart. The story does have a good ending!

After we discussed the book it was on to more fun topics! Oh, but first we all had some Crack Pie that Denise and Rambo brought over, which was a big hit! We talked about how Callah finished the Artist's Way and how she got really frustrated with the book and the author, but she finished it! We talked about how Tina has been standing up for herself with her kids and we were all very proud of her! Next we spent a huge amount of time talking about Rambo's parents and how much fun they are :)!

The next book club is Tuesday August 3rd at 7pm at Rhonda's house. We will be reading Little Bee by Chris Cleave http://www.amazon.com/Little-Bee-Novel-Chris-Cleave/dp/1416589643/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278622359&sr=8-1

We hope that you can make it!!!

Book Club Recap 6/8/10

Attendees: Christopher, Heather, Lisa I., Michelle, Rhonda, Valesca, with appearances by Cooper, Nathan, and Raven :)

We first discussed the book/journal The Artist's Way. Rhonda told us that Callah is doing a great job at following the advice in the book and that she is taking a lot of classes to "enhance" her artist! Great job Callah! Rhonda said that she has stopped doing the Artist's Way because she was very hostile at the author for making her write three pages a day and Rhonda didn't have the time to do that. Valesca is going through "the program" and is working on writing a feature film. The rest of us haven't done it.

Next we talked about Switch by the Heath brothers. Rhonda, Christopher, and I read the book. Rhonda and Christopher thought that some of the ideas in the book were really helpful and were things that they could apply to their jobs. Rhonda has even implemented some suggestions the book has to her work situation (like no phones in meetings). I didn't think that the book was very applicable to me because it mostly discussed situations that applied to companies and not stay-at-home moms. All of us enjoyed the book.

Now we got to the good stuff! This is when we discussed all of the non-book club goings on. I will just let you imagine what we talked about :) I will let you know that Rhonda is already thinking about what to do for her 50th birthday party and was thinking of possibly doing some destination birthday! Sounds like a lot of fun!

We would love to see everyone else at the next book club!!!! Julie, you will be here in spirit :)

Our next book club is Tuesday July 6th, 2010 7pm at Rhonda's house.

We will be reading two books (or one or zero if you don't have time, but still want to come!). They are: Little Bee by Chris Cleave http://www.amazon.com/Little-Bee-Novel-Chris-Cleave/dp/1416589643/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276145372&sr=8-1 and The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint by Brady Udall http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Life-Edgar-Mint-Novel/dp/0375719180/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276145405&sr=1-1

Hope to see everyone there!

Book Club Tuesday June 8th

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to remind everyone that book club is this Tuesday June 8th at Rhonda's house. So far Rhonda, Christopher, me, and possibly Michelle and Lisa K. will be there. If you are coming can you please let Rhonda know? She doesn't want to go overboard on the food if only three of us are going to be there.

We will be discussing Switch by the Heath brothers, but if you haven't read it you can still come for the evening!

Hope to see you there!

Book Club Recap 4/27/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Julie, Keo, & Rhonda.

This book club we met at Barnes & Noble in Encino to hear Ed Lin do a reading of his book Snakes Can't Run, which was our book choice for this month. Ed read three passages in the book and he was very animated during his readings! He likes to do voices. There were mic troubles, but luckily that didn't stop Ed :). After the reading there was a Q&A and some of our members asked questions about the book and Ed's process of writing (of course I don't remember the specific questions and answers!). After book club some of our members chatted for a little bit and then we all left. We didn't really talk about the book among the members, but I think that it was well liked!

**Below are the details for our next book club**
Switch by Chip and Dan Heath here is the link to amazon that tells more info about the book http://www.amazon.com/Switch-Change-Things-When-Hard/dp/0385528752/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273092237&sr=8-1
Book club will be on Tuesday June 8th at 7pm at Rhonda's house

Just as an FYI, I went to put a hold on this book at the library and I was #65 in the list and there were only 18 copies. This means that I wouldn't get the book until after book club :(

Book Club Recap 3/30/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Julie, Lisa K., Rhonda, Tommy, & Valesca. With appearances by Nathan, Raven, and Cooper :)

Lisa K. it was so good to see you at book club because it has been such a long time!

First book up for discussion was Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer. Everyone that read this book was disgusted at how much the US covered up what happened to Pat Tillman. They were shocked that they would tell so many lies and tell so many people to tell lies about what happened. I know that there was more that we talked about this book, but I can't remember, sorry! It seemed like everyone enjoyed this book and I am only 100 pages in and I am enjoying it.

Next was Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. First, we all wish that Keo was there so that he could pronounce some names for us in the book. We are pretty sure that we all butchered the names pretty good! We all really liked the book and talked about how at that time everyone thought that you could get leprosy by just being in contact with a person and how because of that thinking these people were sent to a leprosy colony away from everyone they love. It seemed as though there was a lot of crying that was done by members in our group when they read this book; there were definitely some sad moments. A lot of us want to go to Moloka'i and visit the leper colony there. Again, we talked more about it, but I don't remember it all. It was a historical fiction book and we got to learn a lot about what was happening around that time. If you would like to know more on leprosy (like you wanted Denise) here is the link to the wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leprosy

For our next book club we are switching things up a bit. Denise's friend Ed Lin just had his second book released this past week. We previously read his book This Is A Bust and we all enjoyed it. Ed even came to a book club and talked about that book and his new book. He even gave us a sneak preview reading of the new book. Ed is going to be at the Barnes & Noble Encino store doing a reading on April 27th at 7:30 and we thought that we would meet there for book club to hear the reading of Snakes Can't Run and to talk with him and everyone else about it afterwards. http://www.amazon.com/Snakes-Cant-Run-Ed-Lin/dp/0312569882/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270155116&sr=8-1

Here is the info:
Snakes Can't Run by Ed Lin (I don't know if this will be in an audible format Julie)
Date & Time: Tuesday April 27th at 7:30 (the reading is at 7:30, so we should get there a little earlier)
Where: Barnes & Noble 16461 Ventura Blvd, Encino, CA 91436, 818-380-1636

We also decided to read and do the workbook of The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron http://www.amazon.com/Artists-Way-Julia-Cameron/dp/1585421472/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270155141&sr=1-1 It is a 12 week program and we thought that we would try it out and discuss how we are doing at each book club that we have. To get more info on the book you can go to the link I sent or do a Google search for the book.

Just as an FYI, I was recently introduced to a great used book website. It is www.thriftbooks.com. The books are cheap and there is free shipping in the US! If you don't mind a used book to buy this is a great site. I know that it won't have Snakes Can't Run because the book just came out.

See you in a less than a month!

Book Club Recap 2/2/10

Attendees: Callah, Christopher, Denise, Heather, Lisa, Michelle, Nathan, Rhonda, and Tina...Cooper was there riding the spin bike :)

I am feeling a little on the lazy side so this recap might not be as long as some of the others!

The Hunger Games-most of us liked this book. It was an easy read and a page turner. Most of us had finished it so long ago that we didn't remember specific details. Denise didn't care for it as much as some of us and that is because she listened to a horrible reading of it. Denise played us some of the book and it sounded like a person talking to a bunch of little kids with the slowness and the tone of voice. Anyone would not like the book that much if it was read like that! It was almost unanimous that the ending sucked. Most of us thought that she could have done a better job at wrapping the book up and still making it so that the next book would continue on with the first. I read the second and I liked it more than the first, but I know that Valesca didn't :) We talked a little about how they are going to be making a movie of it and what the movie would be like. That was about it for that book.

Push (Precious)-for this one we talked both about the book and the movie. For the members that watched the movie and read the book we thought that it was a pretty accurate portrayal of the novel to film. Some of us thought that the movie was better than the book. Mo'Nique did an awesome job portraying the mom and we all agreed that the last scene with her was the best! A few of us wanted to walk out of the movie because it was so disturbing and we all know that this story is what actual people do go through.

We also had some fun talking about Chi Running and the clinic that Rhonda and Christopher did. Tina told us some stories about The Biggest Loser. Callah made some delicious peanut butter cookies and had to go home early because she was sick from the kiddos (we hope that you are feeling better Callah!). Denise made some awesome french bread and talked about all of her bread adventures (and food adventures). There was a story she told about a restaurant that was in a kitchen (I forgot the name of it). We had some yummy snacks and wine :)

Next book club is on TUESDAY MARCH 23rd. We are hoping that some of our long lost members will join us! I honestly can't remember what book we decided on reading for the next one. I know that Christopher was tired of "Vagina books" and he is currently into reading nonfiction. So, here are the two that it was between. Rhonda, can you tell me what book it was that we chose?

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman by John Krakauer http://www.amazon.com/Where-Men-Win-Glory-Odyssey/dp/0385522266/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265344975&sr=8-1 Christopher is currently reading this book and suggested it and said that he is enjoying it so far. John's books have been pretty good in the past too.

or

Moloka'i by Alan Brennert http://www.amazon.com/Molokai-Large-Print-Alan-Brennert/dp/1429943238/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265345141&sr=1-1 Perhaps we can read both of them since book club was moved back a little?

Lastly, it seems as though some people are not getting these emails from me :( If you get this email can you let me know? I just want to know who is not getting it. Also, sorry about the junk emails that come after I send out updates!

Book Club Tuesday February 2nd

Hi everyone!

Just a little reminder that book club is next week (Tuesday 2/2) at Rhonda's house. We are discussing the books The Hunger Games and Push. If you haven't read the books they are both very quick reads! We hope to see everyone there even if you haven't read the books!

-Heather
